How Many Sauna Stones Does Your Heater Need?
Use the stone weight specified for your exact heater, not a count of individual rocks. Sauna stones vary in size and shape, so “one basket” or “twenty stones” is not a reliable buying measurement. Start with the heater manual, then work out how much suitable stone you need to purchase.

Step 1: find the correct stone specification
Look for “stone amount,” “stone capacity” or the stone-loading section in the manual for the exact model. Record the permitted material, stone-size range, shape, required load and any maximum limit. Do not treat a maximum capacity as an instruction to exceed the manufacturer’s recommended arrangement.
Heater power in kW and the number of sauna users are not substitutes for this specification. If the manual is missing or unclear, ask the heater manufacturer before buying or loading stones.
Step 2: decide whether you are replacing or topping up
- Full replacement: plan around the manufacturer’s specified stone load.
- Partial replacement: first determine which existing stones are still sound, permitted for the heater and suitable for reuse. Subtract only that usable weight.
- Top layer only: confirm that your heater permits the chosen stones in that layer. Do not order a full-heater quantity simply because you want a different finish.
Perform inspection only when the heater is switched off and completely cool. Harvia’s maintenance guidance explains that deteriorated stones can compact and restrict airflow. Do not hide broken or crumbling stones beneath a fresh top layer.
Step 3: estimate the number of boxes
New stone weight needed = specified load minus suitable existing stones you will keep. If that result is zero or less, do not add more stones just to use a new box.
Estimated boxes = new stone weight needed ÷ approximate net stone weight per box, rounded up to the next whole box. Use one unit consistently: approximately 16 kg per box for a kilogram calculation, or approximately 35 lb per box for a pound calculation.

These examples are not recommendations for any particular heater. Box quantities are approximate, and stone selection for the approved size range can reduce the usable amount. Confirm the actual stone weight and fit before loading. Packaging and shipping weight must not be counted as usable stone weight.
Buying two boxes does not mean loading two boxes
If your manual specifies 20 kg and you purchase two nominal 16 kg boxes, load only the amount and arrangement the manual permits. Keep suitable unused stones as spares; do not force the remaining stones into the heater.
As a partial-replacement example, a specified 30 kg load with 18 kg of inspected, suitable stones retained leaves a 12 kg shortfall. One approximately 16 kg box is a starting purchasing estimate, subject to actual usable weight and fit. The extra stones are not an instruction to increase the total load.
Choose the right type before choosing the quantity
A correct box count cannot make the wrong material or size compatible. Compare rounded and rough sauna stones against your manual before ordering. Follow its placement rules rather than packing tightly to reach a number on a scale.
